Lights, Cameras and Action! My Journey with Twyford Drama

How did you first get involved with Twyford Drama?
My first involvement with the group happened because my mum “volunteered” my services (!) to help with the technical lighting for Diamond Gems, October 2025’s variety show. I have a B-Tech in Theatre Technology, and therefore some experience in programming lighting and sound, and a love of performing arts.
Having only joined the group six months previously, both my parents were already enthusiastically pushing themselves beyond their own comfort zones, giving everything a go, from singing and dancing to playing music in a band. My mum had never sung in front of an audience before (she has now!) and my dad joined the Diamond Gems live band and indulged us (and himself!) with his electric and acoustic guitar playing. Both of my parents also discovered the art of set building (i.e. old clothes, lots of paint, hammer, nails, drill and patience).
If I’m honest, I had no intention of joining a new drama group and taking to the stage. However, it’s been a year since I was co-opted into setting up the lighting for Diamond Gems and I am still here and... I’ve even taken a lead role on stage!
So, what persuaded you to stay?
My Twyford Drama friends helped me to rediscover my love of all things theatrical. Thanks to their support and the breadth of experience they have, I felt my confidence grow and a desire to push myself, so it naturally followed that I would audition for the 2025 pantomime, Aladdin. I was surprised / thrilled / terrified (!) when I was cast in the lead role of Aladdin but the chance to perform, sing and dance, and generally be part of such a great community, was enough to convince me to give it a go.
What would you say is the best thing about Twyford Drama?
It’s that sense of community and commitment which makes Twyford Drama so special. It is evident in every aspect of the club, especially during show preparations – where you get to build bonds with the rest of the group.
And there are always plenty of ways to enjoy being part of the Twyford Drama community beyond the shows, I mean, beyond being a cast member or part of the stage and production crew. It’s a chance to try something new. I’ve enjoyed getting involved in Twyford Drama's music club and I’m looking forward to attending the next play reading evening, but there are also social evenings as well as a play writing group. I think my mum is involved in most of those things, but you can pick and choose whatever suits you and the time you have available.
The best way to decide whether Twyford Drama is right for you is to come and watch a play, attend a social evening, a play reading session or come to the next auditions. You’ll always be made to feel welcome.
And what’s next for you, then Jess?
Hmm... Well, I’m definitely coming to watch the next play, Home, I'm Darling, in October. I am also planning to audition for the next panto, The Little Mermaid, and regardless of whether I am successful or not I’ll definitely get involved in one way or another because I just love The Little Mermaid!
